Partial winterization is the common failure
Systems rarely fail because nobody winterized them. They fail because somebody winterized most of them.
A blowout that clears the main zones and stops leaves water in whatever was skipped - a drip line on its own valve, a lateral running to a far bed, a hose bib tee, a low point where the pipe dips under a walkway. Those are the components that crack, and because the visible zones were cleared, the homeowner reasonably believes the job was done.

The components most often left charged
- Drip zones. Drip runs on its own valve at low pressure and clears differently from turf zones. It gets skipped because it produces no visible spray to confirm the line is clearing.
- Low points in the mainline. Where pipe dips under a driveway or follows a grade change, water pools and stays. These require adequate air volume, not a quick pass.
- The backflow assembly. Above grade, holding water, most exposed to air temperature, and most expensive to replace.
- Isolation valves and hose bib tees. Small dead legs off the main that hold enough water to split a fitting.
- Heads at the end of long laterals. The last head on a run is the last to clear and the first to be declared finished.
Every one of these surfaces in spring rather than winter, which is what makes the connection hard to trace.
How a full shutdown runs
Aqua-Bright's process is three steps:
- Purge the pipes of water so no moisture freezes inside the lines and causes cracks and fractures. Every zone individually, including drip.
- Winterize the backflow preventer and store it correctly. It prevents contaminated water flowing backward into the drinking supply, and a failure in that system is a health hazard.
- Turn off the system controller so it is not wasting energy over winter or triggering a zone during a thaw.

Alexandria's older housing stock
Much of Alexandria's irrigation sits under established landscaping on properties where the system predates the current owner, sometimes by decades.
Two consequences follow. First, documentation is often missing - no zone map, no record of where valve boxes sit, no note of which zones are drip. A contractor working blind on an unfamiliar system is far more likely to leave a lateral charged. Second, older systems accumulate modifications: a bed added here, a zone split there, a line rerouted around a patio. Each modification is a potential low point.

Shutdown, certification, start-up
Three obligations, one calendar.
Autumn: winterization before the first hard freeze. Not the first frost - surface frost forms at temperatures that never reach buried pipe.
Annually: backflow certification by a licensed tester, filed with the water authority. Northern Virginia jurisdictions require it, and the obligation runs with the property rather than the owner. A freeze-damaged assembly fails the test, linking the two directly.
Spring: start-up, which is a diagnostic rather than a switch - gradual repressurisation, zone-by-zone inspection for heads that will not pop up and nozzles clogged over winter, then controller reprogramming for the season.
